Symfony® and Symfony TORIC
These extended range of vision lenses reduce the dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. They provide a continuous range of high quality vision from near to far and all points in between. They provide the added benefit of excellent vision in any lighting condition. This means people can function well in low light activities such as taking a walk at dusk, reading a menu in a dimly lit restaurant, and driving at night.
The Symfony lens has been widely studied in numerous clinical studies involving over 2,000 eyes. In trials 77% of the patients with the Symfony lens had 20/25 vision compared with 34% in the standard distance only lens. In these studies, the Symfony lens:
- Provided seamless, day-to-night vision. The unique properties of the lens help lengthen the focus of the eyes to provide continuous clear vision at near, intermediate and far away distances, and points in between.
- Provided high-quality vision. The unique shape of the lens has been engineered to allow for optimum clear vision and correct for any color distortion.
- Demonstrated a low incidence of halos and glare, which may be perceived as rings or blurring around bright lights. Glare and halo can sometimes affect a person’s ability to drive at night or to perform other visual tasks.
When considering cataract surgery, it’s no longer just a decision based on when to have the surgery. Now people have a choice regarding which lens implant best fits their lifestyle.
Because there are so many options now, it can be confusing. What is most important is that you have a discussion with Dr. Waters about which lens implant will give you to best visual outcome and supports how you use your vision on a daily basis. For example, do you use computers, smart phones and play video games? Do you hunt and fish? Do you golf or play tennis? Do you sew and do fine detail work? Do you read and watch TV?
These are all important considerations, and we want you to have the best vision possible with the most freedom from glasses after cataract surgery. Here are some of the advanced lens implant options for our cataract patients:
Crystalens ™ Accommodating Lens Implant
The Crystalens is an exciting option for people with cataracts who want to enjoy good distance, intermediate and near vision for most activities without glasses after surgery. The Crystalens is a unique lens because it can move with your eye muscles to focus at all distances. This means it “accommodates” and functions like the natural lens in your eye.
According to Bausch & Lomb,
- Significantly more patients implanted with a Crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances than patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%).
- More than 200,000 Crystalens intraocular lens implants have been implanted worldwide, and that number is growing daily.
Because of Dr. Waters’ level of experience, Complete Eye Care has been named a “Center of Excellence” for the Crystalens procedure.
Trulign TORIC ™ Accommodating Lens Implant
The Trulign is similar to the Crystalens but with the added benefit of astigmatism correction for those who need it. It is also an accommodating lens that functions like the natural lens of the eye. It allows people to have good distance, intermediate and near vision most of the time without glasses after surgery.
TORIC Lens Implant
For those whose vision is primarily compromised by astigmatism the AcrySof ™ TORIC lens implant is an ideal choice.
Astigmatism is present when the surface of the cornea is curved more like a football. With the uneven curvature, vision becomes distorted. A person who has astigmatism and a cataract will not regain high-quality distance vision after cataract surgery unless the astigmatism is also corrected or glasses are worn all of the time.
The unique design of this TORIC lens not only corrects distance vision but the astigmatism as well. This allows patients to have good distance vision without being dependent on glasses. Patients will still need to wear glasses for reading, however.
Financing
The Symfony, Crystalens, Trulign, TORIC and ReSTOR lenses are all considered premium lenses and are not covered by insurance, however the cataract surgery itself is still covered by most insurance plans including Medicare. As a result, we have made these lenses affordable with 0% interest financing options.
Patients always have the option of choosing a standard monofocal lens. This lens is not considered a premium lens, and therefore it is covered by insurance. The standard lens implant is a fixed lens that corrects distance vision only. After cataract surgery most people need to wear glasses for near and intermediate vision.
